'Every architect designs herself'. This year Diploma 8 uses self-portraits to critically explore who we are as participants in architectural discourse. As architects of the Architectural Association, we believe that it is us, as a community, who will drive cultural change in our field. In a period of global isolation, we want to see our community, and gather together - in terms of who we see ourselves to be - in a space of shared intimacy: the AA Bar in Bedford Square. The bAAr will continue into 2021 and images of who we were apart will welcome us back to London when we can be together again.
Launching at this year's AA Christmas Party, Diploma 8 will host a Photo Booth breakout room – 'Meet you at… the bAAr' – to take portraits of members of the School Community. Come with any virtual or real background of your choosing, come dressed to party (pre-Covid dress and heels, shirt and trousers/ post-Covid sweatpants and sweatshirt), or just come as you are. We will take a screenshot of you to be displayed in the first bAAr exhibition in a virtual AA Bar. Following the party, we invite you to continue to submit selfies to us to be added to this expanding exhibition of 100 portraits of AA Architects that will be held in the physical AA Bar in Term 2.
