Ahmad Sukkar (MArch (DRL) 2006) has been shortlisted for the Mohamed Makiya Prize 2020. The award is given to individuals and organisations who have promoted, encouraged, campaigned or influenced (directly or indirectly) the advancement of architecture and the built environment in the Middle East and is named after the prolific Iraqi architect Dr Mohamed Saleh Makiya.
Sukkar, who is an architect and academic, has been highlighted for his work around architecture and urbanism in the Islamic world and reconstruction in the Middle East, especially Syria. His research has been disseminated widely, and he has completed a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT’s Aga Khan Programme for Islamic Architecture. He is now a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Architectural Engineering Department at the University of Sharjah.
