AA Emergent Technologies and Design (EmTech) Tutor Abhinav Chaudhary’s research on mycelium bio-composites has been published in a paper and presented at the International Conference for Structures and Architecture 2025 held in Antwerp, Belgium. The research involves a pavilion by PLP Architecture at the Clerkenwell Design Week in 2023 to highlight the versatility and strength of biomaterials, while contributing towards a stronger symbiotic relationship between nature and the AEC industry. Made entirely from bio-based materials, including mycelium/hemp composite, cork, plywood and 3D printed timber, the research pavilion presented a framework for modular architecture situated between computational design, digital fabrication and biomaterials. The pavilion and wider research aim to contribute towards a shift in perception, promoting a more sustainable and environmentally conscious built environment. The paper can be read here.
