AA Head of Photography Sue Barr has announced the opening of the exhibition, Monsters: Fragments of Stuttgart Brutalism, in Stuttgart, Germany, next week.

The exhibition will consist of photographs, commissioned by the Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart under the direction of Prof. Marianne Mueller and AM Constantin Hörburger, showing a selection of lesser-known buildings from the 1960s and 1970s in the greater Stuttgart area. They document residential complexes, administrative buildings, churches and community centres fifty years after creation.

Barr's photographs combine documentary, aesthetic and abstract elements and open a new perspective on the often-controversial buildings. The title of the exhibition addresses this conflicted understanding and stands in stark contrast to Barr’s rich and poetic images.

The exhibition will be open from 11am Sunday 15 May–Sunday 2 October at Städtischen Lapidarium in Stuttgart.
