AA tutor Gabu Heindl's book, Radical Democracy in Architecture and Urban Planning has been reviewed in ARCH+, and received a second print run within just five months of its initial publication. The book, published in German under the title Stadtkonflikte: Radikale Demokratie in Architektur un Stadtplanung, explores the history of utopian architectural projects and the possibilities they offer for democratic and socially engaged architectural and urban policy.
Gabu commented that: 'the book formulates a radical democratic approach to architecture, whilst scrutinising of realised utopias (and lost futures) of 1920s Red Vienna and on the basis of the (self-)critique of participatory planning, in alliances with movements from below. Between theoretical arguments and practices of intervention, the aim is not only to defend but rather to expand the spaces and scope of democracy, especially so in times of its crisis.'
