AA Diploma 4 tutors Ann-Sofi Rönnskog and John Palmesino, co-founders of the practice Territorial Agency have been awarded the European Commission's Grand Prize honouring Innovation in Technology, Industry and Society stimulated by the Arts for their Oceans in Transformation project. STARTS is an initiative of the European Commission to foster alliances of technology and artistic practice that effectively implement European policymaking to nurture innovation and that benefit the art world as well. The focus is on people and projects that contribute to mastering the social, ecological and economic challenges Europe faces.
Oceans in Transformation is a multi-year research project by Territorial Agency investigating the human impact on the oceans. John and Ann-Sofi commented that: 'the oceans are changing very fast, yet knowledge of them is moving slowly and is enveloped in long-established forms of cultural separation and distinction between human activities at land and at sea. This division needs to be rethought to address the urgent and vast transformations that the seas are undergoing.'
The collaborative project has connected hundreds of scientists, artists, policy makers, conservationists and activists from all oceans. Oceans in Transformation is commissioned by TBA21–Academy.
