It is with deepest sadness that the AA has learned of the death of Peter Prangnell, an AA alumnus and former tutor at the school. Prangnell was a student at the AA from 1950–52, and taught as a Second Year Master from 1960–62, replacing Bob Maxwell who was taking over the role of Fifth Year Master from Peter Smithson.
Prangnell went on to have an influential career in education: after teaching at the AA, Harvard Graduate School of Design and Columbia University, he was chair of the Department of Architecture at the University of Toronto from 1968–76, where he initiated a transformative experimental curriculum which was widely admired at the time. In 2022, two University of Toronto students from the class of 1972 initiated the Peter Prangnell Book Project which invited written contributions from graduates and teaching colleagues within Peter’s programme at the University.
Peter will be greatly missed by friends, former students and colleagues; we extend our deepest condolences to his partner, Tony Belcher.
