The recording is of the 9th lecture in the series entitled 'Imago', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1999-2000. In this lecture Mark Cousins begins by discussing the notion of paint (within a painting) as a materiality achieving its ideality by becoming invisible and carrying the spectator into a proximity with the prototype. Cousins then returns to the question of the 'Veil of Veronica', presenting it in terms of the sweat, blood, and liquids from the body of Christ which act to produce a representation, a form of no-form. Cousins continues with an argument concerning the role of 'the brush', whereby it represents a powerful form of hybridity producing materiality and forging a representation out of materiality.
