Admin History: The recording is of the 7th lecture in the series entitled 'Scenography', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2013-2014. In this lecture, Mark Cousins refers to the term 'cupboard love', comparing it to 'real love' and analysing if there are, in fact, any clear distinctions between the two. Cousins then proceeds to explore the meaning behind 'the cupboard', through a comparison of Aristotle and Plato's definitions of space and the concepts of 'hiding' and 'containing'. After elaborating on the notion of the 'caregiver and the omnipotent', with the example of the mother and the child, Cousins takes a psychoanalytic route in discussing the idea of love, affection and optimism in the light of Donald Winnicott's ideas. He ends the discussion by considering the question of 'the gesture' and gesture-based communications.
