Admin History: The lecture was the third in a three-part lecture series entitled, 'The Birth of the Subject'. In this lecture, Mark Cousins presents the work of Michel Foucault on the 'History of Sexuality'. He gives an account of the ideas formulated in Volume 1 (1976) and argues that Foucault is not concerned with what is 'the subject', nor 'the subject' as an effect of social relations, but to trace in modern western societies what he considers the techniques of the 'object subjectification.' The history of sexuality is about knowledge and social practices, which begins at the end of the eighteen-century. From this period, desire, the problem of sexuality and 'the subject' all belong together in one discourse.
