Admin History: The recording is of the 7th lecture in the series entitled 'The Past', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 2002-2003. This lecture continues Mark Cousins' investigation of 'the past' and he examines the question of how far the present goes back, individually and collectively for society. He regards this as not a question of time, neither a temporal or chronological or even a linguistic mark, but, in his words, a question of the internality of the subject and what we mean for the past. Reflecting on Maurice Halbwachs' work, Cousins subsequently argues that the idea of a collective past brings a representations of the past to bear upon the present that we might know what the present is.
Custodial History: Audio cassette recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
Aquisition: Audio cassette was transferred from the AA Photo Libary to the AA Archives in 2019. Digital preservation and access copies were created by the AA Archives in 2021.
