Admin History: The recording is of the 2nd lecture in the series entitled 'The Neighbour', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2009-2010. In this lecture Cousins again addresses the biblical command to 'love thy neighbor' stating that this verse by itself produces the figure of irreducible alterity which is invoked rather than suppressed by the command of obligatory love. Cousins then elaborates on this concept through Freud's ideas on love and hate, on the phenomenon of the crowd, the primitive functioning of individuals in the collective and involuntary identification with the 'leader.' In the end Cousins concludes that this idea of mandatory love creates a boundary and a notion of separation of the inside and outside
