Admin History: The 'Judenplatz, Vienna 1996' symposium preceded the private view of an exhibition of the same name, also held at the AA. Speakers included Sylvie Liska, Andrew Benjamin, Rebecca Comay, Homa Fardjadi and Mark Cousins. The exhibition displayed a number of the contributions to the 1996 competition to design the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial, Vienna, including the winning designs by Rachel Whiteread. According to the AA Events List, the symposium was convened "to discuss issues raised by the competition, which range from the nature of Holocaust memorials to the particular character of Whiteread's work." In this lecture, Mark Cousins investigates the relationship between Rachel Whiteread's work and the ambiguity between mourning and memory. What are the exterior details of an interior? What is the outside of the inside? What has always already been there?
Custodial History: The recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
Aquisition: The recording was transferred from the AA Photo Libary to the AA Archives in 2019. Digital preservation and access copies were created by the AA Archives in 2021.
