Admin History: The recording is of the 7th lecture in the series entitled 'Conservation', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1996-97. In this lecture, Mark Cousins address issues relating to 'management' and 'redemption' since the seventeenth century, which he regard as consequent upon the high valuation placed on categories of fate or misfortune. Cousins considers that the fantasy of the end of the world, associated with questions of death, describes and defines the subject relation to investment. Cousins goes on to describe the concepts of investment and insurance at a cultural and subject level. He points out that individuals transform their relationship to the future through conservation investments that serve to create institutions that regulate what has not yet happened.
