Admin History: The recording is of the 14th lecture in the series entitled 'The New', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1997-98. In this lecture, Mark Cousins focuses on the relation between the new object and the Freudian lost object. Firstly, he talks about psychic operators' tendency to regress to a previous stage, as well as the negative cost of the lost object. He also elaborates on the term image as an effect of the trauma. Secondly, Cousins debates Freud's opinion on 'imago' which is the outcome of violence and guilt that leads to restitution. Furthermore, the lecturer scrutinizes the identification process of celebrities based on the poles of violence and guilt. Finally, he privileges the strength of the new object over the image because the novelty of the new object is that it is second and has no origins.
