Admin History: The recording is of the 4th lecture in the series entitled 'The Neighbour', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2009-2010. In this lecture Cousins further elaborates on the concept of 'substitutability'. Cousins introduces the term 'the next one', to replace that of 'the neighbour', describing the term as situational and abstract. By virtue of it being a series, Cousins regards the term as being more 'substitutable.' He then introduces the concept of 'singularity', illustrating this through the story of Antigone. Cousins then touches on concepts of rhythm and ethics, the notion of 'the queue' in modernity and ideas of 'finitude and futility' caused by intimations of mortality. He then explores Kant's categorical imperatives of ethical injunction and how radical evil can be born out of ethics and obedience, presenting the case of Nazism as a case study.
