Admin History: The recording is of the 7th lecture in the series entitled 'The Neighbour', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2009-2010. In this lecture, Mark Cousins debates the notion of 'community', relating it to the concept of 'the neighbor'. He focuses on what he regards as irrationalities within the idea of 'community' and how they pose a problem to any progressive political theory, through the issue of identity and the category of representation and mimesis. Mark Cousins further elaborates on what he sees as the 'bureaucratization' of communities and the criteria of hierarchy of authorities. The final section of the lecture deals with the appearance of a concept of 'community' in art and architecture, which Cousins views as degrading for both categories.
