Admin History: The recording is of the 2nd lecture in the series entitled 'Psyche and Space', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 2000-2001. In this lecture Mark Cousins proposes the beginnings of a theory of space based on the first of Sigmund Freud's psycho-sexual stages - the oral stage which makes no distinction between insider and outside. Cousins explains that what exists is the rhythm of sucking and pleasure /displeasure. This movement is later repressed but reappears architecturally in the Greek compromise - the repetition of columns. A discussion of Marcel Proust and the approach to sleep follows and the lecture concludes with Mark Cousins looking forward, considering how rhythm will move to biting and the anal stage.
Custodial History: Audio cassette recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
