Admin History: The recording is of the 13th lecture in the series entitled 'Psyche and Space', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 2000-2001. In this lecture Mark Cousins discusses perverse space through an examination of the medium of fetishism. Cousins discusses whether, from Sigmund Freud's definition, the perverse can be regarded as a relationship with an object of desire that either postpones or circumvents the pleasure principle. He elaborates upon his arguement, pointing out the contradictory nature of changing definitions of the 'primitive' since the 18thC. At the conclusion of the lecture the discussion returns to Freud, and Cousins points out that the fetishist doesn't live in a domain of aesthetic distress, but is subject to ceaseless repetition.
