Admin History: The recording is of the 5th lecture in the series entitled 'The Name of the Object', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1998-99. Building upon Sigmund Freud and Immanuel Kant's understanding of the nature of beauty and of aesthetic pleasure, Mark Cousins uses psychoanalytic theory to examine a concept he defines as 'posthumous art'. He re-interprets Freud's account of the phallus and Kant's 'moment' of beauty and argues that the phallus only exists by being veiled and functions both as the herald and the memorial.
