Admin History: The recording is of the 1st lecture in the series entitled 'The Neighbour', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2009-2010. In this lecture Cousins attempts to interpret the biblical commandment to 'love thy neighbour.' In the beginning of the lecture he discusses the Pauline epistles and the difference between love and law, pointing out the paradox seen in the content of religious narratives. He then introduces Freud's concept of reality in relation to the notion of fantasy and desire. He then touches on Nietzsche's genealogy of morals and his attack on religious humanism. In the end of this lecture, he points out the system of mirroring and imitation in religion.
Custodial History: Original recording (format unknown) was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and a digital copy (.iso format) has been retained on the department's servers since c2013.
