Admin History: The recording is of the 1st lecture in the series entitled 'The Past', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 2002-2003. In this lecture, Cousins analyses our relation to the past and also the privileged relation of historians to the past. Cousins explores the concept of interpretation of past as an event, from the point of view of historians and of the law, comparing and contrasting the two approaches. He then introduces the question of 'tense' and how language enables us to speak about the past. Finally Cousins explores the positions of Claude Levi-Strauss and Jean-Paul Sartre as regards history and the history of societies and politics.
Custodial History: Original recording (format unknown) was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and a digital copy (.iso format) has been retained on the department's servers since c2013.
