Admin History: The recording is of the 1st lecture in the series entitled 'Imago', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1999-2000. In this lecture, Mark Cousins brings forward a discussion centralised on the early Christian God as 'the creator', in order to elaborate upon the idea of 'graven' imagery. In doing so, Cousins discusses issues relating to ethics, freedom and evil and the prohibition of the image. He proposes that the difference between image and reality is an adultery and that prior to discussing the positive origins of the image, his lecture confronts the weight, fear, and repression of this association of the image with adultery.
Custodial History: Audio cassette recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
