Admin History: The recording is of the 10th lecture in the second lecture series entitled 'Psyche and Space', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 2001-2002. Following a summary of the previous lectures in this series, Mark Cousins designates that the link between the subject and object of art is primarily the question of identification. Referring to Kant, he explores the idea of disinterestedness, before briefly exploring Freud's theory of sublimation and Melanie Klein's theory of redemption in relation to art. In conclusion, he posits that both theories are incomplete, and suggests another approach to art whereby the viewer is there not to analyse but to be analysed.
Custodial History: Audio cassette recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
Aquisition: Audio cassette was transferred from the AA Photo Library to the AA Archives in 2019. Digital preservation and access copies were created by the AA Archives in 2021.
