In this lecture, Cousins discusses the concept of 'the new', arguing that it stems from an intolerable anxiety caused by human' inability to understand or define what is 'new'. He considers that creativity is born out of a concern with the mechanisms of a subject and goes on to compare human creativity with creation myths and doctrinal stories of God's creation. Finally, Cousins questions definitions of the new in the context of modernism and considers its value as a creative product of thought.
