Admin History: The recording is of the 1st lecture in the series entitled 'Psyche and Space', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 2000-2001, In this lecture Mark Cousins makes the claim that thinking about space in psychoanalytic terms refutes given ideas of space. The lecture concerns the subject and space; the psychoanalytic subject, not Descartes' subject. The relation of 'doubleness' between space and the subject is argued. Cousins argues that Merleau Ponty introduced the body into the discussion of subjective space, but the body in psychoanalysis is about fantasy and desire. He considers that Descartes is subverted - 'I think where I am not and where I am I do not think'
