Admin History: The recording is of the 11th lecture in the series entitled 'Conservation', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1996-97. The lecture is listed in the AA Events List as being entitled 'Child as the Source of Law' but the lecture actually delivered is entitled 'Victims and Politics'. In this lecture, Mark Cousins argues against victimhood and the category of the victim, stating that such constructions play a negative role in conservation and political theory. Cousins claims the category of a victim is as an agent without agency. He cites the example of the working classes, in the Marxist view, and goes on to discuss the category of the oppressed and how the victim is constructed in relation to his notion of damage.
Custodial History: Original recording (format unknown) was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and a digital copy (.wma format) has been retained on the department's servers since c2013.
