Admin History: The recording is of the 7th lecture in the series entitled 'Psyche and Space', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 2000-2001 In this lecture Mark Cousins considers the question of space and psyche through identification. He outlines how this approach is quite different from the way in which architecture and the body is usually thought, the Vitruvian man and the projection of the body, into or as architecture. Cousins argues that every time an architectural theorist mentions projection, there is a mechanism of identification at work. However, Cousins proposes that the identification doesn't always work, as can be seen with the results of the Panopticon. In his view, this constitutes a challenge to functionalism and makes necessary the idea of unconscious guilt and the superego.
