Admin History: The recording is of the 6th lecture in the series entitled 'The Neighbour', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2009-2010. In this lecture Cousins investigates the pronoun 'we' from a philosophical and social perspective. He attends to the concept of 'linguistic relativity', drawing on Aristotle's Metaphysics and considering how human thoughts are bounded by the borders of linguistics and grammar. Cousins takes a detour on the subject of 'the neighbour' or, his preferred term, 'the next one', highlighting the substitutability and the hybrid essence of the term. In conclusion he dwells on the question of the essence of community, finding answers in Kant's argument of aesthetics.
