Admin History: The recording is of the 4th lecture in the series entitled 'The Ugly', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2006-2007. In this lecture, Mark Cousins begins by stating that 'the ugly object is dynamic and continuously expanding its field, always moving towards the subject'. He then expands upon this statement by discussing 'pre-intentions' and 'prohibitions' in ancient religions. Cousins then discusses the mechanism of defence and the defeat of defence, arriving to the concept of the 'negative object' in relation to both the private and the collective subject. He concludes that, in this sense, the ugly object is what should be there, but is absent.
