Admin History: The recording is of the 3rd lecture in the series entitled 'The Ugly', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2006-2007. In this lecture Cousins discusses the regime of image and 'the imago' in the process of identification. Cousins divides the issue of 'the ugly' firstly into categories of image, representation and vision, in relation to beauty and secondly into categories of semiotics and reading, in relation to the ugly. Cousins then addresses John Austin's theory of truth, stating as his first proposition that 'the ugly' is 'what is there but is experienced as what should not be'. In the closing minutes of the lecture Mark Cousins explores the Freudian concept of 'defense' and introduces the idea of scotomization.
