Admin History: The recording is of the 9th lecture in the series entitled 'The Name of the Object', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1998-99. In this lecture, Mark Cousins continues to elaborate on what he regards as the question of 'the name', discussing it in relation to definitions and notions of art. Drawing on the ideas of Immanuel Kant, Jeremy Bentham and Clement Greenberg, amongst others, Cousins analyses philosophical aspects of the category of aesthetics and the judgement and validity of beauty. Finally, Mark considers what it signifies for an architect to be acting in 'the name' of .
Custodial History: Audio cassette recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
