Admin History: The recording is of the 10th lecture in the series entitled 'The Name of the Object', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1998-99. In this lecture, Mark Cousins provides a summary of his thinking in this lecture series so far, before moving on to consider 'the name' in relation to what he sees as a monumental struggle at the heart of the definition of art and subsequently the question of architecture. Mark discusses the term 'art' in its historical context, discussing a range of theorists and examining the 'development' of art. Analysis of the 'character' of art follows, with Cousins highlighting generous acts of inclusion, as well as violent acts of exclusion. Finally, aspects of the relation between art', 'history' and 'the past' are examined.
Custodial History: Audio cassette recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
