Admin History: The recording is of the 15th lecture in the series entitled 'The Name of the Object', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA General Studies programme, 1998-99. In this lecture, Mark Cousins argues that between the individual and the subjective, in the aesthetic experience, the 'I' must, in some sense, die. He elaborates upon his ideas regarding subjectivity and how the domain of art can be understood as a social register. Cousins points out that it is not an empty tautology to state that to create an art or an architectural object is to operate in the name of art or architecture. In the domain of art and architecture, Cousins argues, the character of subjectivity does not permit elitism and such that such an issue is only ever posed sociologically, not aesthetically.
Custodial History: Audio cassette recording was made by the AA Audio Visual Department and retained by the AA Photo Library until 2019, when it was transferred to the AA Archives.
