Admin History: The recording is of the 3rd lecture in the series entitled 'Scenography', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2013-2014. Cousins begins this lecture by touching on the subject of naturalism and the category of nature, introducing the work of Richard Dawkins on altruism and biological instinct. Cousins then explores notions of geometry, 'the straight line' and 'art as protest' in order to arrive at a concept of 'the artificial'. Cousins then dwells on the terms 'transgression' and 'gesture', concluding that art does not mimic, mirror or copy; it is a transgression and an act of protest and rebellion against nature as a constraint.
