Admin History: The recording is of the 9th lecture in the series entitled 'The Ugly', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2006-2007. In the final lecture of the series, Mark Cousins presents an analysis of the city, and of urban architecture, through a system of semiotics. He argues that the city is a complexity of semiotic and signifying systems where people learn to scan and read signs on every sociographical level. He considers the city, by definition, as always already multicultural and in need of homogeneity. Cousins asks whether the city makes possible, through this system, the construction of forms of identification.
