Admin History: The recording is of the 7th lecture in the series entitled 'The Ugly', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2006-2007. In this lecture Mark Cousins begins by discussing the primacy of visual perception, before proceeding to explore the notion of reading in relation to arguments concerning linguistics, semiotics and pictorialism. He proposes that in many instances, particularly within the fields of art and architecture, what the subject is doing is actually reading, rather than seeing. Cousins ends the lecture by defining the ugly as an issue of the ratio between figure and ground - the point where signification breaks down and the 'real' is born.
