Admin History: The recording is of the 8th lecture in the series entitled 'The Ugly', given by Mark Cousins as part of the AA Open Lecture series, 2006-2007. In this lecture, Mark Cousins begins with a discussion relating to philosophical discourse, citing the work of Ernst Gombrich and comparing 'observation' to 'theory'. Cousins then moves to the issue of 'the new', as related to 'the ugly', proposing that the two concepts share aspects of illegibility but work in different areas. Cousins then introduces the notion of non-representation and the unconscious defence against the collapse of semiotics, ending the lecture with the discussion of the 'un-form' and the category of the nameless.
