Adherent Absence is a performance and culminating stage of an art research looking at how touch and smell happen in the public spaces of global cities. This time touch and smell are our tools to unveil our unique truth in a world full of exposed thresholds, secret in-betweens, great nothingness, legitimate post truths, and overwhelming lonely crowds.
Adherent Absence is a performance bringing attention to the body as the purest vehicle to convey truth. By paying attention to touch and smell, the piece promotes an open dialogue between the body and the city. Creating an intimate connection with the immediate context in the public space, Adherent Absence explores the breach between reality and the body through a realm of moving textures and scents.
The performance will happen inside a temporary art installation showcasing a photo and video exhibition of the art research. The concept develops from a research about how touch and smell happen in the global cities. The senses where classified as filtered (or controllable: sight, sound, taste) and not filtered (not controllable, hence uncomfortable: touch and smell). Touch and smell are senses triggered within intimate environments reinforcing relationships. Parting from this, the artist questions the possibility of having a healthier experience within the urban contexts by being aware of such senses while in the public space.
The project was divided into three stages:
1) Photo Essay: As a starting point, Miranda investigates the red-light districts through a photographic essay as vulnerable and overwhelming areas where intimacy is overexposed in the public realm.
2) Public Experimentation: In the second stage she filmed public experiments in Mexico City and London to observe body language while participants create communal spaces and recognise themselves within the public space.
3) Adherent Absence: The final stage is a performance and exhibition showcasing the findings during the art research.
