The cinema, as its name indicates, is a medium which derives its energy and fascination from movement, the movement of its images, its characters, and its stories. As new technologies make increasingly visible the repressed aspect of the concealed stillness of individual frames, the cinemas relationship to time and death becomes more complex. Film theorist Laura Mulvey reflects on the significance of Freuds theory of the death drive in understanding the tension between movement and stillness for storytelling in general, and the cinema in particular.
