Evocation is a precondition for design. Each sketch, study or model seeks to evoke a picture of something that does not yet exist. That something may, if eventually built after years of hard work, become a real thing of wood, brick and glass. Designing is orchestrating mental images, organizing inspiration so as to make meaningful buildings. Evocation is brought about by the naming, arranging and shaping of tangible material elements. It is not space or spatiality that is described but its counter form in concrete and steel . . . Knowledge, skill, and evocation - the three polarities of the architects craft - can be found in all our designs. The variety of demands made by clients and the ever-changing cultural and physical context in which we work, make the emphasis on each of the three elements different for each project. Willem Jan Neutelings studied at Delft University of Technology and worked from 1981 to 1986 at OMA before establishing his practice in Rotterdam in 1987. Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk have been working together since 1992.
