Book Launch and Conversation - Graphic Assembly: Montage, Media and Experimental Architecture in the 1960s

A conversation on the release of Graphic Assembly: Montage, Media, and Experimental Architecture in the 1960s (Univ. of Minnesota Press, 2019). Linking forms of media construction with changes in the industrialization of building in the postwar decades, Graphic Assembly recovers the pivotal role of montage as a cultural technique for architects experimenting with a range of assembly practices during the long 1960s.  

Craig Buckley is assistant professor of art history at Yale University. He is co-editor of Dan Graham’s New Jersey; Utopie: Texts and Projects, 1967–1978; and Clip/Stamp/Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X–197X.

Tina di Carlo is an editor at Drawing Matter, for which she works on exhibitions, publications, acquisitions and the website, editing and producing content. A former curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Director of Lectures, Exhibitions and co-Curricular activities at the Princeton University School of Architecture, she is a Harvard and Courtauld graduate in architecture and art history. Her doctoral dissertation examined how an exhibition could usher in a cultural shift, using the 1988 Deconstructivist Architecture exhibition at MoMA as a case study. She writes and speaks internationally.

Guillermo López is an architect (MAIO) and editor based in Barcelona. He combines his professional activities with academic, research and editorial ones. He has been part of the editorial board of the magazine Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme. MAIO’s work has been published in magazines such as Monocle, Domus, AIT, A10, Dear, Interior Design and Detail among others, and exhibited at MOMA New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and Storefront for Art and Architecture. MAIO participated at Venice Biennial 2016 in the Spanish Pavillion, awarded with the golden Lion, at Chicago Architecture Biennial (2015 & 2017 editions) and co-curated a Weekend Special at the Biennale di Venezia 2014 together with SPACE CAVIAR and DPR-Barcelona. MAIO’s work has been awarded several times including: FAD Opinion Award 2017 for Architecture, FAD Award 2016 for Ephemeral Interventions, FAD Award 2015 for Thought and Criticism and FAD Opinion Award 2013 for Interior Design; Arquia/Proxima Award 2014; LampLighting Solutions Award 2009; Girona Architects Association Award 2007.

Christina Varvia is an architect, researcher, and Deputy Director of Forensic Architecture. She graduated from the AA with a previous degree from Westminster University. Her research concentrates on architectural evidentiary techniques, and more broadly - digital media and memory, as well as the perception of the physical environment through scanning and imaging technologies. She has worked with multiple NGOs, and published and exhibited internationally. She recently joined the Technology Advisory Board at the International Criminal Court.
