Digitally produced (although not manipulated), Mari Mahr's collection of photographs exhibited at the AA pays homage to her architect father, Tibor Weiner, and the older, manual tools of the architect's trade. Throughout the series, instruments assume monumental proportions. Mahr recalls that as a child she was not allowed to touch such mysterious and powerful objects, but now she constructs buildings with them, laying the tools over photographic backgrounds and re-photographing the combination of objects and image. Born in Chile, Mari Mahr studied at the School of Journalism in Budapest and worked as a press photographer before moving to London to study photography in 1973. Her work is in numerous public collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; and the National Gallery of Australia.
