The symposium presents a novel approach to architectural design and sustainability, based on the differentiation of the material systems that make up the built environment towards an enhanced performance capacity. This approach is embedded within a biological paradigm that offers new insights into higher-level functionality of living nature. Mark Burry gives the final keynote lecture from the third session of the symposium. Burry has published on two main themes: the life and work of Antoni Gaud, and putting theory into practice with regard to 'challenging' architecture.
