The Weapons of Choice series, hosted by Kate Davies gathers together multidisciplinary doers and thinkers to delve into the underlying processes behind the making of creative work. Engaging wild minds from the fields of art, design, technology and science in discussion, to explore how the tools available to creative minds activate our thinking in peculiar, particular ways.
Tania Kovats’ sculptures, large-scale installations, commissions, writing and drawings explore our understanding of landscape and currently explore her preoccupation with the sea. Kovats’ publications demonstrate her commitment to drawing as a specific discipline and form of expression with its own discrete discourse that renders thought both visible and external. She celebrates the democratic nature of drawing, its unique horizontal quality that describes a link through the thoughts and visualisations of scientists, engineers, sculptors, designers, performers, children, architects, surgeons – the list is endless. Drawing makes thought visible and belongs to everyone. As such, it is an infinite and varied means of communication that continues to be expanded and enriched by practitioners. She will be discussing her own drawing practice and her approach to drawing as a mechanism of exploration.
Kovats is British born award winning artist; she exhibits and publishes regularly and her work is in major collections. Recent solo exhibitions include Oceans at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Evaporation at the Museum of Science and Industry Manchester, and Troubled Waters at the Phoenix Exeter. She is currently Professor of Drawing at Bath Spa University.
