Jan Kaplicky and Angus Pond of Future Systems and Cynthia Grant of the London Docklands Corporation deliver a lecture to mark the opening of the AA exhibition Floating Bridge: West India Quay which examines the bridge constructed by Future Systems that links the strongly contrasting scales of Canary Wharf and West India Quay. The objective for the design of the bridge was a span between two points with as elegant and minimal structure as possible, giving pedestrians a sense of freedom and space as they cross the dock. By creating a floating structure, emphasis is placed on the stretch of water. The design reinterprets the ancient tradition of the pontoon bridge, creating a gently arched structure floating on four pairs of pontoons. Future Systems is an architectural and design practice headed by Jan Kaplicky and Amanda Levete. After an international career in practice and teaching, Kaplicky founded Future Systems in 1979. He was an AA Unit master between 1982 and 1988. NB: Poor sound quality. No microphones used during Q & A.
