Illustrating his talk with recent work, Brussels-based artist Pierre Bismuth speaks about recurrent notions, such as perception, comprehension, and the processes of assimilation. By using experiments and little exercises as a starting point, Bismuth develops his interest in the relationship between arbitrariness and rules. His drawings, collages, musical compositions and videos reveal the complex thought processes which underlie our approach to simple tasks such as learning to play a musical score from memory or using a computerised thesaurus. Using a variety of devices to track and document the ways we work, he compiles an ongoing study of the frequently overlooked peculiarities of memory, comprehension and interpretation. His work has been exhibited widely. NB: Slight problems with sound quality.
