'Fudo' is the cultural and natural ambience of place, which, in combination with living things, is nature. 'Fu' in Japanese means 'Wind' and 'Do' means 'Soil'. Kinya Maruyama discusses the idea of using an element such as wind to create an architecture that is tied closely to nature. The director of Atelier Mobile at Team Zoo, Maruyama studied with the influential architect Takamasa Yoshizaka, whose students from the 1960s and 1970s at Waseda University in Tokyo went on to set up several architectural practices that tend to have animal names and are thus known as Team Zoo (Atelier Mobile is symbolized by a running bird). Using traditional wood construction, earthen walls and rough concrete, Team Zoo architects such as Maruyama believe in designing architecture in relation to the context and specific tradition of each particular site, utilizing local materials and craft skills.
