From November 2000, the Maeda Visiting Artist, Tadashi Kawamata, worked in collaboration with Intermediate and Diploma students to construct temporary shelters within the urban fabric of London. After completing this project Kawamata applied the same method in Tokyo. Lodging London/Tokyo is the result. Exploring the notion that houses can only become houses through the presence of lodgers, the project also aimed at challenging architecture's emphasis on the permanence of buildings and structures, as well as revealing unusual possibilities for the occupation of urban space.
