Architecture finds itself coping with new social and cultural complexities that radically re-factor and challenge its response through latent and often unknown parameters. Distinctions between information, matter and life reveal intricacies in the speculative realties of a much deeper synthesis. This symposium will open a discussion on the role of generative and behavioural approaches within the conception and production of contemporary architecture and urbanism.
The research conducted under AADRL’s Adaptive Ecologies agenda investigates the role of computation within correlated organisational models that operate between unit/cluster/collective scales. By attempting to build a framework that interrogates organisational models which evolve through computation, this continuing research and experimentation challenges and tests today’s conventional models of planning.
The event, organised by Theodore Spyropoulos, features contributions by John Frazer, Patrik Schumacher, David Ruy, Ryan Dillon and Rob Stuart Smith, along with presentations of student research projects conducted within this design agenda. This symposium will initiate a series of lectures and a forthcoming book launch, which will continue into 2013. The publication, Adaptive Ecologies: Correlated Systems of Living, contains essays by Mark Burry, John Frazer, John Henry Holland, Patrik Schumacher, Brett Steele and Makoto Sei Watanabe.
